Why Harry Potter... sucks (relatively) FYI this article is in reference to the character and NOT the series (so don't go stabbing me!). It makes plausible arguments... better than my own, which all center around 'Harry's turning into Anakin! Spoiled talented brat thinks only of himself!' (I have not yet read 6, and I was grumpy at the time this particular argument came to light, so don't go stabbing me, again, please :)!) Yeah, well... even if you love Harry, it's a worthwhile read. Maybe JK Rowling should read it ;) mwah. I am in an abysmal mood tonight. I think I'll go write. And then KILL somebody. woo. |

***Tbook1 (Time and Chaos, needs a new name, needs to be edited) ***Book of Sun (Just needs to be edited. Tis a Nano novel) ***Book of Whispers part 1 (Does not jive at all with part 2; needs to be rewritten to fit and to have less suckage) ***Book of Whispers part 2 (Needs some rehaul editing, needs some loose ends tied up, needs to fit) ***Book of Whispers part 3 (Needs to be finished... then needs to die o.o Not sure if I need a third part in the series) ***Dium's Story (Needs a point, progress, anything... needs to be integrated into Tbook1, since that is what it is a part of, mainly) ***Trio Story with Jackie and Louise (Maybe we should get together and work on this, guys) ***Demon Story (This is working out pretty good so far. I like the plot, it's a bit convoluted, and the characters are interesting) ***New Witch Story (It's only 30 pages long, dang) ***Dragon's Voices (This has SO much potential! wee!) | ![]() |

I read that article when it came out, and if you'll look at the date, you'll realize that it doesn't matter whether or not you've read HBP, as it was written before that book was published, as well as before OotP.
I think the article is not very well-written. The author gives no evidence, and I think it was only written to rustle feathers.
One of the reasons I LIKE Harry is precisely because of the very premise that he is a hero from the age of one-year-old for something he didn't even consciously do. The beginning of the first book makes it quite clear that he is very ordinary - and yet obviously a hero. I am more attracted to ordinary people who rise up to do great things (JK Rowling does this quite a bit - look at Neville Longbottom, even in the first book).
And even beneath this facade of normalness, we discover as the books progress that Harry is NOT normal - he speaks Parseltongue, his wand is connected with Voldemort's, he possesses powers of Voldemort's, he can even feel and see what Voldemort does - We learn that extraordinary things lie deep within Harry, just as extraordinary things lie in each one of us.
As you know, I love this series, but one of the main reasons I love it is because of Harry himself.
Also, I found calling Harry a 'glory hog' to be grossly out of character - throughout the books, he constantly tries to point out that Hermione and Ron help him. Just look at his interactions with Gilderoy Lockheart, and I think that should be enough to prove the point.
