I've been working on a list of character flaws. As those of you who read my works know (I think that makes--...4 of you. or less), my characters have a tendency to be perfect. Usually because I can come up with this image of them doing certain things and I tend to build off those. and I don't start with bad stuff, either. *sigh* Here's the list so far Danger junkies Complains about minor problems Cowardice Greedy Self-serving Uncontrollable temper xMisogynist xMisanthrope xAnti-men inability to see anything but goodness in other people (excessive) weak refusal to stand up for oneself apathetic/dispassionate/uncaring irresponsible sloppy guilt-ridden to the point of not being able to function the anti-men and anti-women I am probably not going to use as a PRIMARY character flaw, simply because hmm... the notion is repugnant? no, that's not it. It just seems so irrelevant to me in a story. You don't have a character who hates all men of any form in your party, because then they wouldn't be in the party--since it's half men. oh gods, I've started talking about a 'party.' Yes, in my stories, groups of people get together to do things. It's a bit silly. I'm also trying to counteract some of the stereotypical occurences in fantasy writing. The saving of the world, the one determined enemy, the specific delineation between good guys and bad guys, the perfect characters... the long journey, the quest, etc,... okay, I might keep the long journey, and of course there is a quest! it's just... meh... okay, okay, point blank: in this one there's not going to be an attempt to save the world for the ungrateful humanity. A group of wizards, whatever, are going to cast a big spell that will keep magic going in the world. But it's supposed to be two sided. for one thing, some of these wizards are part of a nice hierarchical structure, university-trained and sworn to obey Lord High Pompous Wizard, of course, and they like most hierarchical structures are both bureaucratic and rather stuck up. And also, at the beginning a couple of fighting wizards destroy part of a town in their battle and don't even care. and yeah, basically the wizards' main concern is for themselves. They really don't give a damn too much about the common folk (sort've like the church in the middle ages). I mean, some obviously do, but a lot of common folk don't want magic--wizards do, though. it's their power, of course. so the point is, it's supposed to be a greed-based mission rather than a charitable one.... ... ... ... gosh durn it, something just clicked (I love these moments)... there's a character I know who does a very specific something later on--I think he betrays them, and I couldn't figure out why, but of course if he's in cahoots with those who don't want any more magic, that would be PERFECT motivation for a betrayal... joy. things are clicking all ready. anyway, please add to the list of character flaws so my characters are not mary sues, thanks! |

***Tbook1 (Time and Chaos, needs a new name, needs to be edited) ***Book of Sun (Just needs to be edited. Tis a Nano novel) ***Book of Whispers part 1 (Does not jive at all with part 2; needs to be rewritten to fit and to have less suckage) ***Book of Whispers part 2 (Needs some rehaul editing, needs some loose ends tied up, needs to fit) ***Book of Whispers part 3 (Needs to be finished... then needs to die o.o Not sure if I need a third part in the series) ***Dium's Story (Needs a point, progress, anything... needs to be integrated into Tbook1, since that is what it is a part of, mainly) ***Trio Story with Jackie and Louise (Maybe we should get together and work on this, guys) ***Demon Story (This is working out pretty good so far. I like the plot, it's a bit convoluted, and the characters are interesting) ***New Witch Story (It's only 30 pages long, dang) ***Dragon's Voices (This has SO much potential! wee!) | ![]() |
