But soft! What light through yonder window breaks? It is the east, and Neil Gaiman is the sun-- or at least he looked like he was trying to be in the Orpheum today when he appeared first on one of the balconies. He stood with Peter Straub blinking in the yellow, blurry, aged light of the theatre, a stark figure all ebony with a pale blob of flesh for a face. For only a moment he was there and then he turned and ducked away behind the other man, disappearing into the part of the aged cream curtains that swelled to consume him. The other man turned and left too, and the curtains breathed, the black gap looming in the swollen silence. Neil Gaiman, it must be noted, is a very humorous speaker, and his English accent is not... quite so... narrow as I had thought it might be. In fact he spoke in a light, rounded tone that was both welcoming and warm. I thought that it would have been interesting to just turn out every light in the house and listen to his voice rippling along the fabric of the darkness. A woman introduced them in a long list of awards and book titles and hopes, and then they spoke for a long time about how the "New Wave Fabulous" idea came about and what they really were, how they approached writing. I did nod off once but in my defense Peter Straub has a tendency to ramble. It amused me to observe how they sat. Peter Straub sat like a sports announcer, legs spread and hands gesturing. Gary(??) Wolf had his legs crossed, delicately, more like Mr. Rogers or a talk show host. Neil sat as if the chair were a natural extension of his body rather than an object. I did get a book signed. Fwee. Jackie and I scurried out of the auditorium as soon as they announced the position of the signing and we were able to be very far up in line (despite the massive number of people). There was brief panic because it had been announced that there would only be signing for 15 minutes. I thought we would not get to him in time, much less the rows and rows of people behind us, but Neil came to us instead--down the line, sharpie in hand. But kindly, of course--he very happily switched from red pen when the page I intended him to sign turned out to be red, and he came back to Jackie when he saw she had a second book. Jackie took notes on the lecture, and pictures--I hope she'll let me see them, some things were quite well said. And of course my motivation to acquire the Sandman comics has increased ten fold. After we left Jackie and I squee'd like giddy children--with due reason, I think--and then went to Real Chili UPDATE: and the Packers won, apparently! joy of joys! |

***Tbook1 (Time and Chaos, needs a new name, needs to be edited) ***Book of Sun (Just needs to be edited. Tis a Nano novel) ***Book of Whispers part 1 (Does not jive at all with part 2; needs to be rewritten to fit and to have less suckage) ***Book of Whispers part 2 (Needs some rehaul editing, needs some loose ends tied up, needs to fit) ***Book of Whispers part 3 (Needs to be finished... then needs to die o.o Not sure if I need a third part in the series) ***Dium's Story (Needs a point, progress, anything... needs to be integrated into Tbook1, since that is what it is a part of, mainly) ***Trio Story with Jackie and Louise (Maybe we should get together and work on this, guys) ***Demon Story (This is working out pretty good so far. I like the plot, it's a bit convoluted, and the characters are interesting) ***New Witch Story (It's only 30 pages long, dang) ***Dragon's Voices (This has SO much potential! wee!) | ![]() |
