Science Writing is... and an opportunity peeking at me! http://www.fnal.gov/pub/about/public_affairs/internship_calendar.html at Fermilab, no less. Reading the description makes me wonder if that's really what interests me. Biochemistry, biology, chemistry, and all that does not interest me so much, and it looks like it'd crop up often. Also, the salary sucks in comparison to doing research. But what if I focused on a specific place? APS, Fermilab, LANL, whatever--they all need science writers. I could work for that, and then I would definitely stay focused on physics. But not astrophysics, which is what I really love to look into, what I really understand. I was looking, in general, for things to do over the summer--came up with a great list of REUs that involved cosmology or radio astronomy or just some darn interesting stuff, and a tiny collection of science writing internships. apparently those are reserved mostly for graduate students. What to do? I think I will definitely take that intro journalism course when I get the chance, here, and apply to be a feature writer for the local undergraduate science journal. there's good experience for me. I shall have to look and see if there are any specific science writing courses available here, though I doubt that there are. Meanwhile, I think I'll work off the plan of me going to grad school for a PH.D in cosmology-related astrophysics. Or stellar--the stuff we do in stellar is absolutely FANTASTIC! and if things get too flippin annoying I can switch to science writing with little trouble--it's only a 1 year grad program. hmm, planning my whole life, joy! |
