Allow me, for a moment, to rant. Take seven hot girls and seven intelligent men. Make them live together and film them, like in Real World. Then see if the girls learn from the men and the men learn from the girls. That's basically the premise for this show, Beauty and the Geek. Now does anyone else find this ridiculously offensive? I know that reality tv shows get by on shock value, but let me list some of the things that are wrong with this, in my eyes. 1) the socially awkward geek stereotype Maybe I've been hanging around with fellow geeks for far, far too long, but I think geekiness is far more acceptable than people make it out to be. It seems to me that most of the geeks I know (and I do know a lot) get by just fine in non-geek situations. Granted, they aren't preferable situations, but the geeks don't puddle into little pools of unhappy silence, either. Let me say it again: these people know how to be socially acceptable within a certain degree. Where does the assumption that they *can't* come from? 2) the stupid girl stereotype I bet you were expecting me to put this first. I admit it is one of the primary pissing off factors. The men in this show are chosen to be smart. The women in this show are chosen to be hot. The premise of the show is to see who learns from who in this show. The men are supposed to pass on their smarts to these women. If you were told you were hot and put in a house with someone you were told was intelligent, wouldn't you feel as if they were condescending to you every time they tried to tell you anything? I know that I personally would reject everything this "intelligent" person tried to give me. It would drive me crazy. Also, why couldn't they choose some socially awkward girls (as if those haven't been mocked enough yet), or extremely intelligent women? I'd rather see a show where a bunch of "hot" women and "smart" women are supposed to see what they can learn from each other. It seems to me that by choosing men for the "intelligent" side, labeling them as "intelligent", and not labeling any of the women as "intelligent" is just pretty despicably reinforcing stereotypes of the roles of women and men. I once wondered where stereotypes came from--peripheral stereotypes, not the out-right discrimination which stems from them. I don't really wonder anymore. Everything paints the same picture; everywhere I look I see the same thing. I *always* see that men are supposed to be smart and I *always* see that women are supposed to be thin and beautiful. No wonder our society has no interest in the intelligence of women, nor appreciates women whose beauty falls outside the current standards. 3) I don't remember the "Beast" from Beauty and the Beast being particularly smart, though he was a social recluse (yet he knew how to dance, so he would've done quite well, he just didn't like other people... because, of course, he wasn't hot. I don't know, I think he was more a social outcast than a recluse; capable of fitting into society and yet not allowed, as opposed to choosing not to; of course he got into his situation because of him being prideful, vain, and having a runaway temper.); anyway, the analogy of the title's a little loose fitting. GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! [edit: Jessi: is this better?] |

***Tbook1 (Time and Chaos, needs a new name, needs to be edited) ***Book of Sun (Just needs to be edited. Tis a Nano novel) ***Book of Whispers part 1 (Does not jive at all with part 2; needs to be rewritten to fit and to have less suckage) ***Book of Whispers part 2 (Needs some rehaul editing, needs some loose ends tied up, needs to fit) ***Book of Whispers part 3 (Needs to be finished... then needs to die o.o Not sure if I need a third part in the series) ***Dium's Story (Needs a point, progress, anything... needs to be integrated into Tbook1, since that is what it is a part of, mainly) ***Trio Story with Jackie and Louise (Maybe we should get together and work on this, guys) ***Demon Story (This is working out pretty good so far. I like the plot, it's a bit convoluted, and the characters are interesting) ***New Witch Story (It's only 30 pages long, dang) ***Dragon's Voices (This has SO much potential! wee!) | ![]() |
