Fwee for Writing Critique Group! I owe Elisa many thanks; first for coming up and organizing this thing, and seeing it through, and second for being cool, and third for being the darndest sweetest person in the whole world, and a good conversationalist to boot. I took the new short(ish) story to writing group (see below). And it went... well! I got a TON of excellent advice. Right now what I'm going to do with it is keep going with it and see how long it turns out to be. I know which direction the plot is heading, and it's just a question of how much flashbacking is necessary to flesh out the backstory to Kaina's vision quest and Indara's soldiering. I am honestly really excited about it--it's been a while since I felt anything other than conflicted about a story. Part of the cause for the *lack* of conflict here is that I'm not lost in a tangled plot. Most of my novels have a complex plot in order to make it a more interesting story (I am trying to wean myself from straightforward save-the-world stories which are so common to fantasy). This story is, when all is said and done, a rite of passage tale. It's about the characters, the two of them together, their relationship--and how Kaina's "visions" influence that. Kaina is basically torn between the reality in which she lives and her personal faith in the voices she hears. Indara doesn't know if she believes in Kaina's voices. How does this make them interact? BWAHHAHAHAH! at last I have a character driven story! and if it turns out to be a novel, not a short story, ... fine :) Labels: WCG |

***Tbook1 (Time and Chaos, needs a new name, needs to be edited) ***Book of Sun (Just needs to be edited. Tis a Nano novel) ***Book of Whispers part 1 (Does not jive at all with part 2; needs to be rewritten to fit and to have less suckage) ***Book of Whispers part 2 (Needs some rehaul editing, needs some loose ends tied up, needs to fit) ***Book of Whispers part 3 (Needs to be finished... then needs to die o.o Not sure if I need a third part in the series) ***Dium's Story (Needs a point, progress, anything... needs to be integrated into Tbook1, since that is what it is a part of, mainly) ***Trio Story with Jackie and Louise (Maybe we should get together and work on this, guys) ***Demon Story (This is working out pretty good so far. I like the plot, it's a bit convoluted, and the characters are interesting) ***New Witch Story (It's only 30 pages long, dang) ***Dragon's Voices (This has SO much potential! wee!) | ![]() |

Cool. It's so good to see you writing, it makes my heart happy.
I have a thought about backstory- sometimes it's nice for you (the author) to know a lot of details, while not necessary or even good for me (the reader) to know them all. Having a fully fleshed out backstory is really important to crafting believable characters, but flashbacking can be confusing or overwhelming to a reader who is looking for plot and character development. My Two Cents. I prefer characters and worlds that feel lived in, as if there's alot going on that I don't know and don't have to know, just like when I meet a new person in real life, I don't usually need to know what all happened to them in high school. Usually I'm more interested in seeing how characters interact with each other, and it sounds like you've got some great ideas for that- yayyyy character driven stories!!!
Lovelove
you, my dear, have it in a nutshell.
yet I feel like some flashbacking is necessary. not too heavy, but enough. Especially for something as confusing as Kaina's ... "fits" or trances. I'm not going to go into her childhood, or even most of her life before she left on this vision quest. But since they live alone, away from town, I feel like a flashback might help flesh out the world. emphasize it as a fantasy or medieval-like world. explain or hint at some of the religion. etc.
errrr... *is done*
