While I was waiting for the bus to come, I saw this headline on a Chicago Tribune: Domestic Wiretaps Ruled OK and it made me want to cry. Can anyone tell me if our constitution guarantees people the right to security? NO. because it doesn't. But the right to privacy... that we're supposed to have. GAH. By the by, a new poem for today: Let There Be Life** When at last her child was born, wet new flesh the same color as clay, they called her the creator. She can't say she ever felt the engendering* wind in the back of her throat, urgent and incessant, spilling forth into the dark. She's never spoken light, never moved over the face of the water, nor heard the fealty of angels. But her words are stone-hewn, sometimes revered, sometimes shattered. and she too has played with clay up to her elbows, cast children from her garden. She knows Eve's burden of wisdom; has lit a fire in tangled brambles of thought. Her tongue can be a flaming sword; she has raged with weeping enough to drown the world. She has forgiven. She has forgotten. And now, holding her child in her hands, she can feel the heartbeat she gave him, and she smiles. *(impregnable? which is capable of producing, and simultaneously fortified) ** oh yeah, I suck at titles. |
