There comes a time in every writer's life when one begins to realize how much one is truly indebted to other writers. I know no writers who are not simultaneously avid, desperate readers. At a certain point one sits back from the page, pen lax in hand, and thinks for a moment of the glorious stories that have come before, of the people who made such an impact on our own stories. Truly enervating, powerful books that make the writer inside curl the toes in delight just to remember; characters who one associates with, who are human and real, and yet do things to inspire; worlds so clear that one could walk through them; plots which tell the stories that strike deep resonant chords with one's own soul. I was devastated this morning to learn that one such an author, Madeleine L'Engle, has passed away. I read "A Wrinkle in Time" and the rest of the books in the series when I was in fourth grade. It is one of the few books that struck a thunderous note in my mind; one of four children's series that I still own today (the others are Tamora Pierce, Lloyd Alexander, and C.S. Lewis). One of the points I loved about L'Engle's work was the uniqueness of her characters, situations, and creatures. They were fantastical--the cherubim, the unicorns, the ability to tesselate, the travel through time and other planets--in ways that traditional fantasy was never able to achieve. There was equal blending of fantasy and science fiction, and there was enough physics to keep me excited. When I was in 6th grade, I also read "A Ring of Endless Light," which is therefore the first novel to ever make me openly weep. L'Engle's work was intense, vivid, and emotive, and a powerful inspiration for myself as I aspired to learn the techniques of strong writing. She was a guide, of a sort, from a distance, and a method of maturation, and a new perspective into standard fantasy. It is painful knowledge to know that she is gone, and all the remaining stories that brimmed within her gone as well. |

***Tbook1 (Time and Chaos, needs a new name, needs to be edited) ***Book of Sun (Just needs to be edited. Tis a Nano novel) ***Book of Whispers part 1 (Does not jive at all with part 2; needs to be rewritten to fit and to have less suckage) ***Book of Whispers part 2 (Needs some rehaul editing, needs some loose ends tied up, needs to fit) ***Book of Whispers part 3 (Needs to be finished... then needs to die o.o Not sure if I need a third part in the series) ***Dium's Story (Needs a point, progress, anything... needs to be integrated into Tbook1, since that is what it is a part of, mainly) ***Trio Story with Jackie and Louise (Maybe we should get together and work on this, guys) ***Demon Story (This is working out pretty good so far. I like the plot, it's a bit convoluted, and the characters are interesting) ***New Witch Story (It's only 30 pages long, dang) ***Dragon's Voices (This has SO much potential! wee!) | ![]() |
