It very much irritates me to study with a group of people for things like Quantum or Astro, mainly because of their pessimism. Everyone in the group is so quick to label the upcoming test as impossible, hard, and ridiculous. The most common thing I hear is "it doesn't matter what you do, you're fucked." This has recently started to irritate the crap out of me. Maybe it's because of the fact that I've begun to study in earnest now, really trying to learn and handle and apply the material in class and in the book. Maybe it's because of McNair, and the GUTS tutoring workshop, which both reminded me that STUDYING for physics is not an impossible wall to get through but a pile of rubble to climb over (so long as I remember to break it down into pieces). Overall, however, I am certainly more confident in my abilities because I have been able to accomplish these pieces of studying and I feel prepared (perhaps the most prepared I've ever been for a physics exam in my life). So listening to these people WHINE and BITCH about how hard and impossible it is makes me rather pissed off. They make me lose confidence in myself. UPDATE: The test is over. It went... average... but I feel good about it. I know it was really bad for a lot of other people, so I'm not too freaked. A couple of really challenging problems that I wish I had my tutor to ask about. |
